Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS)
Full Definition

The federal agency in the Department of Justice that administers and enforces immigration and naturalization laws. These laws concern the admission, exclusion, deportation and naturalization of non-U.S. citizens. The INS inspects immigrants to determine their admissibility into the United States; evaluates requests by immigrants for benefits under the law; guards against illegal entry into the United States; investigates, apprehends and removes people who have entered the country in violation of the law; and evaluates applicants wishing to become citizens.
