Integrated circuit card
Full Definition

1. (An ISO term) An identification card into which has been inserted one or more integrated circuits. 2. Also called Smart Card. Smart card technology is: 1. an embossed plastic card with a silicon chip and possibly an encoded magnetic strip. 2. retail and branch equipment for reading and writing information from and to the smart cards. The card's chip can be encoded with financial and customer data and that data can then be read and updated by authorized retail institutions and the bank. Security access codes can also be stored in the chip and used to control access to (for example) a banks customer information system. EEPROM (Electrical Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) technology may also be employed.
