This allows the transaction to be processed through the system as soon as an event happens (for example a check is deposited) and the system will automatically `hold' the transaction until a period has passed (in this example the time needed to clear the check). Until the `hold' period is passed the funds will not be available for the client to draw upon or use as collateral. See also available balance.
