In a story by Lisa Kelly of Computer Weekly, Fear of competition rather than clear business strategy was reported as a crucial driving force in the adoption of IT by small businesses, according to a survey by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

Some 87% of the respondents (to the survey) owned or had access to a computer, and of these 84% were online and 60% had developed Web pages. But the survey also revealed that, for at least one-third of respondents, "fear of being left behind" was the key driver in their IT deployment.
