It's true that good news is hard to find in the overall job market. However, as is often the case, one sector shines the light of better things to come, small business.

In an October 2001 Economic Trends survey, published by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), twenty-five (25) percent of small biz owners reported at least one hard to fill job opening. This marks a return to the level reached in July, which is surprisingly high considering current events. This compares to an average of 33% during 2000 and a peak of 35% during November 2000.

Overall, 27% of all companies had at least one hard to fill job opening. This is down four points from August.
